Why Dragon Train Was Banned From Casinos: $127.5M Lawsuit Explained
Dragon Train slot machines were removed from casinos because a U.S. federal court ordered Light & Wonder, the manufacturer, to pull all 2,200 machines from North American casinos in October 2024 after losing an intellectual property lawsuit to rival company Aristocrat Gaming.
Aristocrat Gaming sued Light & Wonder in March 2024, claiming Dragon Train was an illegal copy of its popular Dragon Link and Lightning Link slot games. The lawsuit alleged that Dragon Train copied audio, visuals, game mechanics, and gameplay features, and that Light & Wonder hired two former senior Aristocrat engineers who had worked directly on Dragon Link to lead the Dragon Train development. One game mathematician named Emma Charles also allegedly violated confidentiality agreements by sharing Dragon Link details with Light & Wonder.
On September 24, 2024, U.S. District Court Judge Gloria Navarro granted Aristocrat’s request for a preliminary injunction, ruling that Light & Wonder was highly likely to have stolen Aristocrat’s trade secrets. The court order required Light & Wonder to immediately stop selling, leasing, or operating Dragon Train machines in North America, which included casinos in Las Vegas and throughout the United States.
Light & Wonder began removing approximately 2,200 Dragon Train slot machines from casinos across the United States and Canada starting in October 2024. Matt Wilson, Light & Wonder’s CEO, called the situation “an isolated incident” and worked with casino operators to convert the machines to other games in their existing portfolio.
The legal dispute ended in April 2026 when Light & Wonder agreed to a settlement that required the company to pay Aristocrat $127.5 million, permanently stop selling Dragon Train worldwide, remove all existing installations globally, and agree to production monitoring to ensure they stop using Aristocrat’s trade secrets. This case became a major example of intellectual property protection in the casino gaming industry, showing that even established manufacturers face serious financial and operational consequences for copying competitors’ proprietary game designs.
